AdBlue In Your Diesel

In Surrey we have found increasingly more examples of AdBlue contamination when somebody has put AdBlue right into their diesel fuel tank. This is in part as a result of motorists not being totally sure how to use it (please note: it is in actual fact not a fuel additive), and in part simply because the inlets for diesel and AdBlue are often right adjacent to each other on the car.

Now, precisely what is the trouble with putting AdBlue in the diesel tank? As the product is mostly deionised water, it is almost the same as putting water into your tank. Diesel and water don't mix in the least and trying to run a diesel car on water isn't going to work. Furthermore, the urea is fairly corrosive to your fuel system pipes and seals and is at risk of crystalising, obstructing injectors and fuel filters.

If you find you have put AdBlue into your fuel tank get it drained right away. And absolutely take care not to turn over the motor - not even to move it into a parking area. Assuming you did start the car you would in all likelihood have to have the complete fuel system purged and filters changed.

Water contaminated fuel

Fuel contaminated with water, irrespective of whether it is petrol or diesel, is undoubtedly a significant situation to handle in a car - particularly in modern-day common-rail engines.
